Used Car Buying Secrets

When buying a used car, there are some secrets to starting off on the right foot with a dealer.  And it has to do with honesty:

There are many things that you don’t want to see a used car dealership  do to you as a buyer.  (By the way, these go for a new car dealership as well.)  By the same token, there are certain things that you should not do as well.

Because if you do them, you'll alienate the dealer and he just might pull out some sneaky tricks to use on you.  At minimum, don't expect for him to make it easy to get the deal you want.

Why make it harder on yourself?  Just tell the truth but don't reveal the contents of your "buyer's folder" that we'll cover shortly.

Here is a list of “don’ts” that you should abide by if you really want to get a good deal.

  • Don’t try to pull one over on the dealer by lying about the condition of the vehicle you plan on trading in.  You can't get away with this fib and it could cause many cost increases later... (read: "royal screwing").
  • Don’t even bother looking for a car if you have had a recent bankruptcy because you won't get approved anyway.  (Actually, this isn't always true.  You may get approved for 15%-22%!)
  • Don’t give the dealership a deposit and then try to take it back for no reason.  You should research the car before making the purchase. Otherwise you can also lose money on the return; they have your money!
  • Don’t bother lying about your debt load and credit rating because they will check it anyway and disappoint you, while causing unneeded embarrassment.
  • Don’t offer any money for a car unless you already know the dealer cost!  Otherwise you're setting yourself up to get ripped off big time.  But we'll cover that in detail shortly---it's easy, you'll see.

Most people are on guard when looking to buy a used car.  While this is good, make sure you abide by the above used car buying secrets.  Your best car deal starts out with being honest - this is one of the best car buying tips you can have.
