    Other wireless headphones often work at 900 MHz and use FM transmission. These headphones are the least expensive wireless option. More advanced digital wireless headphones work at 2.4 GHz or 5.8 GHz. The main drawback of FM headphones is a noticeable hissing, audio distortion and fairly high susceptibility to interference which I caused by the transmission.

    Digital wireless headphones, such as Amphony headphones, encode audio data prior to the transmission. This makes this type of headphones superior in terms of sound quality. Digital wireless headphones are also fairly robust against interference. Some digital wireless headphones work at the less crowded 5.8 GHz frequency band. This band offers less competition from other wireless devices compared to the 2.4 GHz band.

    How Tiny Will They Get? – The New Generation Super-Mini Audio Power Amplifiers

    Latest models of audio super-mini amplifiers confirm that audio technology has gone the same route as computer technology and cell phones. Products are shrinking at a rapid pace. At the same time, vendors are packing in more and more features. In the past, tube amps would be commonplace and take up a large part of the living room. Tube amps still have their fair share of fanatics. Nonetheless they have been replaced by solid-state amps for the most part.

    While traditionally there would be separate pre amp and power amp stages, today’s solid-state amp merge everything into a neat package no larger than the size of a VCR. A new generation of super-miniature amplifiers, such as the Amphony Model 100 microFidelity amp, has become feasible due to new developments in audio technology concerning power efficiency. These mini amps take up no more space than a deck of cards but deliver up to 50 Watts, which is plenty to drive a speaker to high volume.

    In history, audio amplifiers would possess rather low power efficiency due to the “Class-A” and “Class-AB” architecture of analog amplifiers. Analog audio amplifiers by nature only convert a small percentage of the power they consume – normally in the order of 20% to 30% – into audio while a large portion is dissipated as heat. This requires that depending on the supported output power, analog audio amps have to provide considerable cooling which is achieved by using heat sinks. These heat sinks do not allow these amplifiers to be made very small.

    Digital “Class-D” amplifiers offer higher power efficiency than analog amplifiers – typically around 80% to 95% – and thus can be miniaturized. “Class-D” amplifiers employ a switching output stage. This stage introduces nonlinearities which creates audio distortion. This difficulty has had an impact on the success of digital amplifiers.

    More recent “Class-T” and newer “Class-D” amplifier architectures, such as Amphony’s Model 100, incorporate a feedback mechanism where the output of the amplifier is fed back to the input. By using this feedback, the amplifier can compensate for nonlinearities of the output stage. This permits the distortion to be reduced to levels similar to analog audio amplifiers. At the same time the amplifier provides the high power efficiency of digital amplifiers.

    These new generation miniature audio amplifiers are suited for a variety of new applications where previous audio amplifiers have failed. These applications include installations, such as in-ceiling installations, with minimal space or connecting speakers to a cable box or DVD/MP3 player where minimum space is important.
